Air Liquide and CMI Take Stake in Clean Gas Solutions Company
03/04/2014 - On 5 February 2014, Air Liquide and Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie (CMI) took a stake in the capital of Xylowatt, a company active in clean gas solutions from biomass and waste materials.
The two new shareholders join the historic investors in Xylowatt: Vives‐Sopartec, SRIW, SFPI and other private investors. This operation has been carried out along with an increase in the capital of Xylowatt, of a total of almost € 6 million.
This transaction is completed by cooperation agreements for the industrialization of Xylowatt’s NOTAR® solution, which involves the production of clean gas from biomass and waste materials, through processes of air and oxygen gasification.
CMI has engineering, project management and technical capacities and skills which complement the functional skills of Xylowatt in gasification. Their multiple skills will be able to be deployed to optimize the NOTAR® solution and operate it at an industrial level.
Air Liquide is taking a stake in the capital of Xylowatt via its ALIAD (Air Liquide Investissements d’Avenir et de Démonstration) subsidiary, which houses the group’s investments in young innovative companies offering new technologies. Air Liquide will contribute technically to the finalization of the oxy‐gasification of various types of biomass and to marketing the solution to its customers.
Pierre Etienne Franc, vice president Air Liquide advanced Business & Technologies Europe commented: “This particularly innovative solution should enable Air Liquide to offer its industrial customers a quality source of renewable energy.”
Jean Jouet, development director of CMI said: “The Xylowatt technology completes our offering of environmental solutions. We are already active in energy efficiency, in the treatment of liquids, gas and certain solid materials. Making use of waste material to produce energy clearly forms part of the challenges which motivate us.”
Olivier Lefebvre, CEO of Xylowatt, stated: “This partnership opens up a totally new phase for Xylowatt. The company was already recognized in Europe for its expertise and its capacities for innovation. With the help of these two first rate partners, it enters into a phase of industrialization of its solutions in order to respond to the technical and economic demands of the market.”
A European specialist in the energy conversion of biomass and waste products, Xylowatt has developed and deployed the NOTAR® technology. Gasification reactors equipped with NOTAR® technology are internationally recognized for producing clean gas, suited both to cogeneration applications and to industrial uses. In collaboration with its industrial and commercial partners, Xylowatt is constantly innovating in the domain of generating value from numerous types of waste, and markets industrial demonstrators for this.
World leader in gases, technologies and services for industry and health, Air Liquide is present in 80 countries with more than 50,000 employees and serves more than 2 million customers and patients. Air Liquide’s revenues amounted to € 15.2 billion in 2013, and its solutions that protect life and the environment represented around 40% of sales.
CMI designs, modernizes and maintains equipment in the energy, defense, steelmaking and general industry domains. The solutions which CMI provides to its clients contribute to improving the economic and technical performance of their production tools, while reducing their environmental footprint. In 2012, CMI turned over € 792 million and had over 3,600 highly qualified staff members. Based in Seraing, Belgium, CMI has installations in Europe, the USA, Africa, Brazil, Russia, India and China.
